What is engagement rate?

Engagement rate is the percentage of your audience that actively interacts with your content through likes, comments and shares. It’s one of the clearest signals of how genuine and active a following is, which is why brands often value it more highly than raw follower numbers when choosing who to work with.

How to calculate engagement rate

The standard formula is: (average likes + average comments) ÷ followers × 100. For example, an account with 10,000 followers averaging 450 likes and 30 comments per post has an engagement rate of 4.8%. This engagement rate calculator does the maths for you and compares your result against typical benchmarks for each platform.

What is a good engagement rate?

It depends heavily on the platform and your audience size. As a rough guide, around 1-3% is average on Instagram, TikTok tends to run far higher, and Facebook much lower. Smaller accounts often see higher engagement rates than large ones, because their communities are tighter and more responsive.

Engagement rate calculator FAQ

Why does engagement rate matter more than follower count?

A large following with low engagement can signal inactive or purchased followers, whereas strong engagement shows a real, responsive audience. Brands increasingly pay for genuine influence, not vanity metrics.

Does a good engagement rate vary by platform?

Yes, significantly. Each platform has its own norms, so this tool uses platform-specific benchmarks to judge whether your rate is low, average, good or excellent.

How often should I check my engagement rate?

Checking monthly, or after a change in your content strategy, is usually enough to spot trends without obsessing over day-to-day swings.
